    Roasted Ranch Potatoes

    Easy, zesty roasted Ranch Potatoes are a simple side dish that goes with almost any meal. The tender red potatoes develop a great crust with tons of flavor using a packet of ranch seasoning!

    When it comes to planning a meal that the whole family will love, don't overthink the sides! These simple ranch potatoes can be prepped and tossed in the oven in under 5 minutes, then ready just 25-30 minutes later. They are awesome with our Air Fryer Meatloaf or Baked Ranch Pork Chops (you can even make them on the same pan!).

    Recipe Ingredients

    You only need 3 ingredients to make this ranch potatoes recipe. See the printable recipe card below for exact amounts and full instructions.

    • Potatoes: We like red potatoes best for their thin skin and waxy texture that holds up well to roasting. Yukon gold potatoes are our second choice, although you could even use Russet potatoes if that's what you have on hand.
    • Olive oil: This ingredient helps the ranch seasoning stick to the potatoes while also crisping them up on the outside so they develop a nice crust. You could use melted butter or vegetable oil instead, if you prefer.
    • Ranch seasoning: We love this herbaceous seasoning blend so much that we always keep some on hand in the spice cupboard. You can use one of the store bought packets or make a batch of homemade ranch seasoning and just use 2 tablespoons.

    Step-by-Step Photos

    These ranch potatoes are so easy to throw together that you can easily assign this job to one of your kids (as long as they are old enough to handle a knife) while you work on the main dish. Be sure to see the recipe card for full ingredients and instructions.

    • Prep the potatoes. Wash your potatoes and halve or quarter them so they are evenly sized. This not only exposes more surface area so they develop a nice crust while baking, but it also helps them to cook more evenly when they are similarly sized.
    • Season. Transfer the potatoes to a large, resealable Ziploc bag or a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to coat, then add the ranch seasoning and toss again so it's evenly distributed.

    • Cook. Dump the potatoes onto a large baking sheet and spread into a single, even layer. Bake for 30-35 minutes at 450 degrees F until fork tender and the potatoes have started to brown and char in spots. Use a spatula to flip the potatoes about halfway through.

    Recipe FAQ's

    Can I make ranch potatoes in the air fryer?

    Yes, definitely! The only drawback to this (and the reason we usually make them in the oven) is that our air fryer capacity isn't super large and I can't make enough roasted ranch potatoes to feed everybody without doing multiple batches. But if you want to use the air fryer, just follow the recipe below and roast for 20-25 minutes in the air fryer at 400 degrees F.

    How far in advance can these be made?

    These roasted potatoes really are best eaten right away while the outsides are still crisp, so I don't recommend making them far in advance. However, if you have an air fryer, that does a pretty good job of crisping them back up if you are reheating.

    Top Tips

    • Using Russet potatoes: If you use Russets, we recommend slicing them into thick wedges, sort of like steakhouse style fries. This gives more surface area and they tend to roast more evenly than when they are cut into chunks.
    • For even more color: If your potatoes are done but you want more of a charred surface, you can brown them quickly under the broiler for a minute or two at the end.
    • Consider doubling the batch: You'll be astonished how quickly everybody goes through these irresistible bites. We will often double the batch just so we can have leftovers to fry up with some bacon and scrambled eggs for breakfast the next morning.
    • Don't overcrowd the pan: You want space between the potatoes so they don't steam. So if you are doubling the batch, make sure to use two separate pans.

    Recipe Variations

    • Spicy ranch potatoes: If you want your roasted potatoes to have a little kick, try using the spicy ranch seasoning mix or add ¼ to ½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper when seasoning the potatoes.
    • Cheesy ranch potatoes: Add ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese to the potatoes along with the ranch seasoning, then toss to coat. Or sprinkle 1-2 cups of shredded sharp cheddar cheese over the potatoes during the last few minutes of baking and let it melt.
    • Loaded ranch potatoes: For a full meal based on these delectable little bites, top them with cheese and crumbled, cooked bacon, the dollop with sour cream and sprinkle with chopped green onions or chives.

    Storage & Reheating

    Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. You can also freeze them for up to 2 months, then thaw and reheat to serve.

    We like to reheat in the air fryer or oven to crisp up the outsides of the potatoes, but a microwave can also be used. Or you could fry them up on the stovetop in a large skillet with a little oil over medium-high heat.

    Ingredients

    • 2 pounds red potatoes, quartered
    • ¼ cup olive oil or melted butter
    • 2 Tablespoons dry Ranch dressing mix (one 1-ounce packet)

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with foil for easy cleanup.
    • Toss potatoes in olive oil, then toss in Ranch dressing mix. Roast for 30-35 minutes, until crisp, brown, and tender. You may want to flip the potatoes over with a spatula halfway through, but it's not totally necessary.
