A spoonful of greek seasoning is scooped from a glass jar and displayed on a spoon.

I used to buy jars and packets of seasoning blends, but discovered that fillers and extra salt can be added. Once I realized how easy it is to make your own, I never looked back! Best of all, this versatile Greek seasoning gives a burst of flavor to your food and can be used in so many ways. Use for veggies, potatoes, meats, poultry, sauces, soups, grains, and salads for a healthy and flavorful boost to your meals.

    Recipe Ingredients

    • Oregano: This robust and earthy herb is one of the most important ingredients in this mix, so don’t omit it for the best flavor.
    • Basil: Also essential to building the flavor of this blend, basil adds a sweet and peppery taste.
    • Dill: This herb has tangy, citrusy and sweet notes and is often used in Mediterranean cuisine.
    • Onion powder: Adds a depth and a subtle sweetness to the blend.
    • Garlic powder: Gives a savory flavor, and so much easier to use than fresh garlic.
    • Marjoram: Similar to oregano but milder and slightly sweeter.
    • Parsley: This doesn't have a bold taste, but adds freshness and a pop of bright color to the blend.
    • Salt & pepper: These two enhance all of the other flavors in the blend. You can customize the salt level to your preference or for dietary restrictions.

    Recipe FAQ's

Are homemade spice blends healthier than blends from the grocery store?

With many store-bought spice blends, there are additives and other preservatives used to prolong the shelf life. By making your own Greek spice blend, you only add the needed spices.

What ingredients are in Greek seasoning?

Greek seasoning usually contains a blend of Mediterranean spices including oregano, basil, dill, marjoram and parsley, plus onion powder and garlic powder to boost the flavors.

    Top Tips

    • Rub Greek seasoning onto meats before roasting or grilling for a burst of flavor.
    • Add this seasoning to hummus or tzatziki and serve with sliced veggies.
    • Sprinkle Greek seasoning over vegetables like sweet potatoes, broccoli or brussels sprouts before roasting in the oven or over salads before tossing for extra flavor.
    • Mix with a splash of olive oil and spread over breadsticks before baking them for a savory flavor boost.
    • Add to soups and stews for a more complex flavor while not adding many calories.

    Recipe Variations

    • If you're limiting your salt intake, using homemade Greek seasoning allows you to dial down the salt in the recipe.
    • Create a marinade for meat by mixing the seasoning with olive oil and lemon juice, and use on chicken, lamb, pork, seafood, and even beef kebabs.
    • You can omit the marjoram or parsley if you don't have them on hand or don't like them. I prefer to add them both for best flavor.

    Storage

    • To store: Place spice blend in an air-tight jar/container away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Use within 3 months for the best flavor. Storing in a glass jar is preferred as sometimes plastic containers can absorb the smells of spices.
